A keypad phone in a market stall can complete the same Ewale airtime sale as a smartphone. The constraint is the USSD session clock and the PIN prompt on the paying SIM.
Payments happen on Ewale (ewalepay.com or *714*22#), not on this blog.
What you need
- Any GSM handset that can dial USSD.
- The paying SIM inserted (or a wallet that receives the prompt on that number).
- The destination number written down if you cannot open contacts mid-session.
The flow on *714*22#
- Dial *714*22#. Do not open WhatsApp or a browser.
- Work the menu with the number keys.
- When the PIN prompt arrives as a separate message, approve it. That prompt is the payment.
- Wait for the SMS receipt even if the USSD screen has already closed.
After you pay
Closing the USSD screen is not the same as cancelling. If MoMo sent a prompt, check history before you assume nothing happened.
If something fails
- Slow feature phone: Start again if the session dies. Check the wallet first.
- Cannot receive SMS: A full SIM inbox can hide receipts. Delete old messages.
No app, no data. The shortcode is the product for this phone.
