How to buy ECG prepaid online in Ghana

Online ECG prepaid means a named digital channel — PowerApp, bank or telco apps, ewalepay.com, *226#, or *714*22# — not a WhatsApp wallet. Confirm the meter name, pay once, type the token.

Buying ECG prepaid “online” in Ghana does not mean uploading a photo of a meter to a website that prints electricity. It means using a digital checkout that talks to ECG’s vending engine, receiving a token of about twenty digits, and typing that token on the keypad. The checkout can be an official app, a USSD session, a telco menu, a bank app, or a payments site. This blog is none of those. Nothing you read here debits a wallet.

Official utility doors: PowerApp and *226#. Operator doors: often *170# on MTN and *110# on Telecel/AT. Everyday recitable door this site recommends: Ewale *714*22# or ewalepay.com — any GSM phone or a browser, registered-name check, SMS token, and other bills on the same product. Use whichever named channel you can finish. Ignore “online agents” who are just personal MoMo.

What you need before any online path

The prepaid meter number from the plate or CIU, not a guess. The registered name you expect. A wallet or bank balance that covers the amount plus any fee on the summary. A phone that will receive the PIN prompt and, later, the token SMS. A torch if you are doing this in the dark. Neighbour-check: if the whole street is out, you may be buying into an outage; the token will wait, the feeder will not rise for you.

If the house is postpaid, online prepaid vending will not settle that bill. Wrong product, wasted panic.

Web and app routes

PowerApp. Official smartphone path. Login with a Ghana number. OTP SMS; if it is late, *713*414# may display it quickly — that is not the shop. Add the prepaid meter, confirm the name, Buy Credit, pay, copy the token from the app and SMS.

Bank or telco apps. Real when they list ECG prepaid and show a token or a clear vending receipt. Easy to mix with postpaid “pay bill.” Saved beneficiaries with typos are expensive.

ewalepay.com. Browser checkout. Useful from a laptop in another town. Still confirm name. Still get digits to the person at the meter. A closed tab is not proof of failure — check wallet and SMS.

USSD is still “online”

Ghana’s most reliable digital rail does not look like a website. *226# is ECG’s USSD. *714*22# is Ewale’s. *170# and *110# are operator malls. They do not need data. They are the reason a feature phone can buy prepaid without walking to a vendor.

Online snobs who say “USSD is not online” still need a token. The meter is not impressed.

Preferred everyday: *714*22# for a short, teachable flow. Backup official: *226#. Fluent telco users may stay in *170# / *110# if the name is right.

The online flow, independent of brand

  1. Choose one channel.
  2. Enter the meter.
  3. Read the name. Stop if wrong.
  4. Enter cedis. Read the total.
  5. Approve one PIN.
  6. Wait for the token.
  7. Type it on the meter. Confirm key.
  8. Keep the SMS and any reference.

If step 6 is slow, do not repeat 1–5 on a second website. One debit unless reversed. ECG care 0302 611 611 after a real debit with no token.

What “online” must never mean

A Facebook live, a Telegram bot, a WhatsApp number with an ECG logo, a USSD you cannot attribute to ECG, a telco, Ewale, or your bank. Those harvest PINs or take P2P transfers. ECG has been public: they do not collect into private personal wallets.

If a site asks you to type your MoMo PIN into a web form instead of waiting for the telco prompt, leave.

Online on a feature phone is still online

If the only device is a keypad handset, you are not excluded from “buy ECG prepaid online.” You are on the USSD half of online. Dial *714*22# or *226#. Do not let a stall attendant convince you that internet is required. Data is required for PowerApp and for a browser. It is not required for ECG’s cashless USSD or for Ewale’s shortcode.

MTN users who insist the internet is *170# can stay there if they can find prepaid without buying airtime. Telecel/AT users can stay on *110# with the same caution. Fluency is allowed. Teaching a new person is easier on *714*22#.

How much to buy on a first online attempt

First digital vend should be small enough that a mistake is painful but not catastrophic. You are testing name check, PIN prompt, SMS destination, and your ability to type the token. Then you can buy the amount the fridge actually needs.

Huge first vends on a meter number from chat are how remote-pay disasters happen. Photo of the plate first.

Aftercare that is still part of buying

Screenshot receipts. If the token is rejected, retype once, confirm you are on the paid meter, then stop and diagnose (used, old, invalid, CRC are different). If you paid for another house, you are the SMS owner; read digits slowly to whoever stands at the keypad.

Weekends and nights are valid online hours. Vendors sleep. Vending engines less so. Session drops still happen; wallet history is the referee.

Buy ECG prepaid online by naming the channel, checking the name, paying once, and entering the token. Save *714*22# so “online” still works when the browser and the official app do not. Keep *226# as ECG’s own USSD so you are never trapped by a single brand of checkout.

Dial Ewale now

Keep *714*22# saved. It is the backup that works when an app, OTP, or data fails. One shortcode also pays Ghana Water and TV bills.
