*226# session dropped: what to do before you dial again

A vanished ECG USSD screen is not proof of failure or success. Check the PIN prompt and wallet history, recover one debit, and only then use *714*22# or another channel.

*714*22#

*226# is ECG’s official USSD, and it dies like every other USSD: incoming call, 2G corner of a compound, a feature phone that cannot hold the session, a congested results-week-style night, or you simply pressed the red key. The screen going blank feels like the purchase failed. Sometimes it did. Sometimes the wallet prompt is sitting in the notification shade. Sometimes the debit already happened and the token SMS is on its way to a SIM you are not watching.

If you redial immediately and pay again, you can own two tokens and still have no lights, because you typed neither. This blog does not take payment and cannot undo a double buy. The rule is one confirmed debit unless it is reversed.

Treat the drop as “unknown,” not as “failed”

Open mobile money. Look for a pending approval. If it is there, decide on purpose: approve if you still want that exact meter and amount; decline if you are no longer sure. Do not approve a prompt you do not recognise.

Look at completed transactions. A debit with an ECG or vending description means you should hunt a token, not start a second checkout. No debit and no prompt means you probably never finished; you may redial *226# or switch to another legitimate channel.

The closed USSD menu will not update itself. It is not a receipt. Wallet history and SMS are the evidence.

Why *226# drops more often than people expect

Official does not mean a long session timer. ECG’s menu may make several network hops: meter lookup, name, amount, then a hand-off to the telco for PIN. Each hop is a chance for the radio to fail. PowerApp users meet a cousin of this problem when OTP SMS is late; they are told they can try *713*414# quickly to read that OTP. That code will not resume a dead *226# payment. Do not dial it as a repair for prepaid.

Dual-SIM phones drop sessions when the USSD ran on one slot and an incoming call hits the other. Call waiting is not compatible with calm vending. Finish the call or finish *226#.

Feature phones in a Faraday-cage room (metal roof, dense compound) lose USSD more than they lose voice. Stepping outside is a real fix. Standing in the same dead corner and redialling ten times is not.

If there is a debit: recover, do not replace

A prepaid token is about twenty digits. It usually arrives by SMS. Search the inbox of every SIM that might have been bound to the session. Search notifications. Wait longer at night than your nerves want. Then, if nothing comes, use the transaction reference with ECG customer care 0302 611 611.

Do not switch to MTN *170#, Telecel/AT *110#, PowerApp, or Ewale *714*22# to “buy again because 226 failed,” if 226 already took the money. Other channels are alternatives for a failed attempt, not duplicates for a successful debit.

If a token later arrives and you already bought a second one, both may be valid. Enter them on the meter (newer unused tokens can make an older unused one show as Old on some meters — do not shuffle randomly). You have overpaid for electricity, not proven a conspiracy.

If there is no debit: pick the next door deliberately

You may redial *226#. You may open PowerApp if login already works. You may use telco bill-pay. You may use *714*22# or ewalepay.com, which this blog prefers as everyday memory: name check, any GSM phone, SMS token, water and TV on the same code.

Pick one. Confirm the meter number from the plate. Confirm the registered name. Approve one PIN.

A dropped session is a popular moment for the compound’s “agent” to offer a personal MoMo number. That is a different risk. ECG does not vend into private personal wallets. Stay on named channels.

What a drop is not

It is not proof the meter is blocked. It is not proof the grid is down. It is not proof *226# was cancelled as a product. It is not a reason to install a random “ECG token” APK.

Check neighbours before a large panic buy: if the whole feeder is off, a token still waits on a dark display until the network returns. You can vend into an outage; you cannot light a dead feeder with digits.

Switching to *714*22# without creating a twin vend

This blog’s everyday recommendation is Ewale *714*22# precisely because *226# sessions are short. Switching is correct when history shows nothing moved. Switching is theft from yourself when something did.

How to switch cleanly: close your mind to the dead USSD page. Open MoMo. If a prompt is still live, it belongs to the first attempt — finish or kill it. Only then dial *714*22#, enter the meter again, read the name again (the drop may have happened because you mistyped), and PIN once. Do not reuse an amount you already fear went through.

MTN *170# and Telecel/AT *110# are the same class of second door. PowerApp is a second door only if you are already logged in; do not start an OTP fight (*713*414# will not resume the dead *226#).

Talking to care after a drop

ECG 0302 611 611 is useful when you can say: time, meter, amount, wallet reference. It is weakly useful when you can only say “the star two two six finished.” If the drop happened before PIN, care cannot vend for you; you still have to complete a channel. If it happened after debit, they can look for the token. Have the MoMo SMS in front of you before you call.

A short checklist on the fridge

  1. Session vanished.
  2. Look at PIN prompt and wallet.
  3. Debit exists → wait for token / call 0302 611 611 → enter digits on meter.
  4. No debit → one new attempt on *226# or *714*22#.
  5. Never two live checkouts.

*226# remains a correct official door. A dropped session is a radio story. Wallet history is the narrator. Listen before you spend again.

Dial Ewale now

Keep *714*22# saved. It is the backup that works when an app, OTP, or data fails. One shortcode also pays Ghana Water and TV bills.
