“Buy ECG online” is three different interfaces wearing one English phrase. USSD is the dialler. Apps are PowerApp, bank apps, and telco apps. Web is a browser checkout such as ewalepay.com. All of them, when honest, are trying to do the same thing: take a prepaid meter number, show you who it is registered to, debit you once, and issue a token of about twenty digits for that meter.
This blog does not run a checkout. It will not debit MoMo. The preferred everyday path we tell people to remember is Ewale *714*22#, because it does not need an app store or a stable browser, it confirms the name, it SMSes the token, and it also pays water and TV. That preference is about completion rate in Ghana houses, not about declaring PowerApp unofficial. PowerApp and *226# are ECG’s own doors.
The product is never “in the app”
Until you type the token on the keypad or customer interface unit, the lights do not owe you anything. App ticks, USSD “success” pages, and web receipts are evidence of payment. The meter is the till.
If you only live in PowerApp, you may think a failed login is a failed grid. If you only live on web, you may think a closed laptop is the end of vending. USSD exists because Ghana still has keypad phones, exhausted data, and nights when Chrome will not load a payment page.
USSD: *226#, *170#, *110#, *714*22#
*226# — ECG’s official USSD. No data. Prepaid and postpaid live nearby; read the label. Sessions drop. Best when you already registered the meter and want the utility’s own menu.
*170# — often MTN’s bill-pay mall. ECG is a store inside it. Easy if you already navigate MTN. Easy to mis-tap.
*110# — often Telecel/AT payments. Same logic. Not an ECG brand. Still can vend if you reach the right biller and identifier.
*714*22# — Ewale. Pick ECG prepaid, enter meter, confirm name, one PIN. Preferred here as the recitable everyday code.
USSD strengths: feature phones, no Play Store, works when data is finished. Weaknesses: tiny screens, session timers, incoming calls, easy to lose the plot if you open two codes at once.
The official app: PowerApp
ECG PowerApp is the right graphical tool when it works. Saved meters, receipts, faults, sometimes extra services. Login is a Ghana number plus OTP. If the OTP never shows, ECG’s own documentation points to *713*414# for a short window to read it. That is not a third vending interface. If login is dead, stop fighting the app and vend on USSD.
PowerApp wants a smartphone, storage, and enough data to finish the session. It is a poor primary plan for a house whose only always-on device is a feature phone. It is a good weekday tool for a landlord who likes history.
Sideloaded “ECG token generator” APKs are malware with extra steps. If Play Store will not load the official listing, do not hunt Telegram files.
Web checkout
A browser on ewalepay.com is useful when you want a larger keyboard for a long meter number, or you are paying from a laptop in another town. You still need the meter number, the name check, and a wallet or other method the site offers. You still need the token to reach the person standing at the meter.
Web fails when data fails, when the tab sleeps, or when you close the page before noting the reference. A closed tab is not a failed debit. Check SMS and wallet before starting again.
Bank websites and some bank apps also expose ECG as a biller. Those are real channels. They need login, sometimes tokens from hardware or SMS, and they may be prettier at posting postpaid than at teaching you how to enter a prepaid token. If the bank flow is prepaid vending, you will still receive ~20 digits. If it is “pay ECG bill,” you may have paid postpaid by accident.
How to choose without a personality quiz
- Keypad phone, no data: USSD. Prefer *714*22# for everyday recall; *226# as official backup.
- Smartphone, data, meters already saved, OTP works: PowerApp is comfortable.
- Paying from an office PC for a house in another region: web or bank app, then a voice call to read the token.
- MTN-only brain, already in *170#: finish there if the name is right; do not start a second interface.
- Login hell on the app: USSD, not a second download.
Fees can differ by interface. The confirmation screen is the truth. Extra fee is not extra units.
The one-interface rule
Whatever you pick, finish it. Parallel PowerApp plus *226# plus web is how pending states multiply. One debit unless reversed. If SMS is late, wait. Then ECG 0302 611 611 with the reference from the interface you actually paid.
Confirm the registered name on all three interface types. A large web form is just as capable of sending a token next door as a fat-fingered USSD.
Ignore personal MoMo “online agents.” Online, in good faith, still means a named biller or payments firm, not a nickname.
After the interface succeeds
Copy the token from the original SMS or the official receipt, no spaces, onto the meter, confirm key. Screenshot the receipt. If the display rejects the token, retype once, confirm you are at the meter you paid, then stop spraying codes — used, old, invalid, and CRC errors are different stories.
USSD, app, and web are transport. ECG vending is the factory. Save the transport your household can complete in the dark. For this blog, that recitable transport is *714*22#, with *226# and PowerApp kept as honest siblings, not enemies.
