ECG prepaid shows zero units but the lights are still on

Zero remaining kWh should cut supply after the relay drops. If lights stay on, you may be reading the wrong screen, on a shared feed, in a grace window, or looking at a tamper / bypass problem — not a free token.

Prepaid is supposed to be honest: remaining units hit zero, the relay opens, the house goes dark, you buy a twenty-digit STS token, the relay closes. When the CIU says 0.00 and the fans still spin, people either celebrate “free light” or panic that the meter is haunted. Both reactions miss the boring list: wrong screen, grace / residual behaviour, another meter feeding the sockets, a stuck relay, or a tamper / bypass that will end in ECG’s office.

Do not vend twice to “fix” lights that are already on. This blog does not process payments. Tokens are sold by ECG channels and licensed checkouts such as ECG PowerApp, *226#, vendors, and Ewale (*714*22# or ewalepay.com). Check the glass, the wiring story, and whether you even needed a token tonight.

Confirm you are on remaining energy, not another figure

Scroll the CIU. Last token, date, tariff-ish codes, and remaining kWh live on different pages. A “0” on a page that is not remaining credit is a misread. Photograph remaining credit. If it is truly zero and load is still live, continue. If remaining credit is actually 4.2 and you misread, you do not have a ghost. You have eyes at 2am.

NURI Display-hold until Relay is a CRC procedure, not how you check remaining units. Short presses to scroll.

Shared feeds and the neighbour’s tank

In compounds, sockets in your room may still be on someone else’s meter while your prepaid CIU is a leftover from a previous arrangement — or the reverse. Zero on your display plus live lights can mean you are not looking at the meter that feeds those lamps. Trace in daylight. Buying a token on *714*22# for the CIU in your corridor will not change a feed from next door, and it might load a box that is not even in circuit.

Illegal extensions keep lights on with zero on the official meter. That is how tamper flags and fires appear. Do not “solve” it with more STS. Solve it with a legal meter and an electrician who will not break seals.

Relay lag and stuck closed

Some units take a moment to drop load at true zero. Wait. If the relay never opens, the meter may be faulty or tampered. Stuck closed means unmetered or uncut load — ECG’s problem, not a coupon. Stuck open after a good token is the opposite pain (you paid, still dark) — re-enter, check error word, NURI CRC path, CLOU upgrade path.

Do not bang the box. Do not open it. 0302 611 611.

Should you still buy a token?

If remaining is truly zero and this meter actually feeds you and you expect cutoff any minute, yes — buy once on a name-checked channel. Preferred everyday: *714*22#. Official: ECG PowerApp, *226#, vendor. If lights are on because of a bypass, buying credit does not legalise the bypass. If lights are on because of a feeder from another meter, you may be paying the wrong tank.

If remaining is zero, lights on, and you do get cutoff an hour later, that was delay. Have the token SMS ready. Do not buy a second in the delay window.

Zero units, dark house, different article

That is empty prepaid or an outage. Check remaining kWh versus whether the whole street is dark. Empty: enter unused token or vend once. Outage: tokens wait in SMS; entering them still helps only if the meter is the reason. This “lights still on” piece is the weird leftover case. Do not mix it with ordinary top-up.

What a healthy cutoff is supposed to look like

On a working prepaid installation, remaining kWh trends down as you load the house. Near zero, some meters warn on the CIU. At zero, the relay opens, sockets die, the fridge clicks off. You buy twenty digits on *714*22# or ECG PowerApp or *226#, you type, remaining jumps, relay closes, lights return. If your life never includes that cutoff despite months of “zero” on a screen, you are not looking at remaining energy, or the relay is not in circuit, or someone bypassed.

Bypass is not a lifestyle. ECG finds it. Neighbours notice a house that never buys tokens. This blog will not explain how to steal. It will say: if cutoff never happens at claimed zero, call 0302 611 611 and an electrician who will not break seals. Meanwhile do not stack unused STS “to prepare” — you may already not be on that tank.

If cutoff happens an hour after zero, that delay is not permission to invite a party. Have the unused token ready. One vend. Torch the keypad. Do not pay a vendor and USSD during the delay because you are scared the relay is “thinking”.

FAQ

Is it safe to keep using free light at zero?

If it is a fault or bypass, it can become a tamper case. Do not plan a lifestyle on it. Call ECG.

Will a new token force the relay to behave?

A valid token should add units and close a relay that opened for empty credit. It will not fix a bypass.

PowerApp shows zero, CIU shows 12.

Trust the CIU for remaining energy. The app is not the tank.

If it still fails

  • Celebratory high load at zero: If the relay finally opens you will still be at zero, now dark, possibly with a damaged fridge cycle.
  • Opened the meter to look at the relay: Tamper flag.
  • Bought three tokens “to reset”: Sequence mess. One vend after diagnosis.

Zero on the correct remaining-units screen should mean cutoff. If lights stay on, investigate feed and relay — then buy at most one STS credit on *714*22# when you know this tank is actually yours.
