When prepaid credit “does not show,” the first useful screen is not Buy Credit. It is Transactions, History, or Receipts inside the ECG PowerApp. That list is how you find out whether ECG’s vending stack already issued a token, whether MoMo only authorised, or whether you are about to pay twice for the same darkness.
This blog does not process payments. It also cannot open your PowerApp for you. The point of history is to stop a second debit. If the app itself will not load, you still have SMS, the MoMo statement, ECG’s USSD (*226#), and a practical checkout on *714*22# or ewalepay.com. None of those replace the meter keypad. They tell you whether a token already exists.
What the history row is trying to say
A typical successful prepaid row contains an amount in cedis, a date, a reference, the meter number, and — if vending finished — a token. On keypad meters that token is usually twenty digits. Screenshot the row before you leave the screen. Ghana phones drop app sessions; the screenshot survives.
Pending is a status, not an insult. Pending means “do not buy again.” It does not mean “the channel is broken so try Ewale immediately.” Check MoMo first. If the wallet was not debited, you can retry after a few minutes. If the wallet was debited, you already bought something. Hunt that something in SMS and in PowerApp. A second purchase on a second app is how a household owns two tokens and still has no lights, because nobody typed the first one.
Failed rows matter too. Failed with no debit is a nuisance. Failed with a debit is a support ticket. Read the wallet. People remember the red text and forget the deduction.
Receipt versus token versus units
These three objects get mashed together in compound-house arguments:
- The receipt is ECG’s (or the checkout’s) record that money moved and, often, that a token was generated.
- The token is the numeric string you type on the meter. Until it is accepted, the house is still dark. A beautiful PDF does not spin the fan.
- The units live on the meter LCD after a successful entry. PowerApp does not display those units in real time for most keypad meters. Do not expect the app balance and the LCD to match.
If you paid postpaid by mistake, the receipt will look official and still not produce twenty digits. History is also how you catch that product mix-up.
How to read a receipt like a sceptical adult
Open the receipt and check four fields before you walk to the meter.
Meter number. Match it to the plate, not to memory. Landlords with three saved meters tap the wrong row under stress.
Name. If the registered name is not your household, do not enter any token you already received. Call 0302 611 611 with the reference. Entering a valid token on the wrong meter, or leaving a valid token unused while you buy another, makes recovery harder.
Token digits. Copy from the original receipt or SMS. Do not retype from a WhatsApp forward that added spaces and a motivational verse. No spaces on the keypad. Confirm key after the last digit (often the blue or enter key on the CIU).
Time. If you bought twice in three minutes, use the later token only after you understand the first. Some meters reject an older unused token as Old once a newer one has been loaded. That is a sequencing problem, not proof that the first payment vanished.
Print is optional. A screenshot in a folder named ECG 2026 is enough for a district office or for a landlord who wants proof you paid your own room. Email the PDF to yourself if PowerApp offers it. Do not post receipts in a public Facebook group; they contain meter numbers.
When history is empty but MoMo moved
The app can lag. SMS can beat the in-app list by several minutes, especially at night when ECG’s systems and the telco SMS centres are busy. Wait. Open the SMS thread from ECG or from the checkout you used. Search the inbox for “token” and for the last four digits of the meter.
If PowerApp history stays empty after a clear MoMo debit, you still should not start a new Buy Credit. Use the reference on the MoMo SMS when you call 0302 611 611. If you bought through *714*22# or the web checkout, use that provider’s support with the same rule: one debit, one investigation, no panic second purchase.
Telco bill-pay menus (*170# on MTN, often *110# on Telecel or AT) produce their own SMS trails. Those trails are as valid as PowerApp’s logo. The meter does not grade branding.
Sharing receipts without sharing the login
Tenants should send the screenshot, not the PowerApp password. Landlords who insist on seeing the token can see the SMS. They do not need to control the wallet that will receive a future refund.
For a shop or a church with several prepaid points, export or screenshot each receipt into a dated folder. When someone claims “we bought this morning,” the folder ends the debate. If the app is down on the treasurer’s phone, USSD receipts still arrive as SMS. Prefer *714*22# as the everyday backup because it confirms the meter name before PIN and texts the token to the paying phone — then file that SMS the same way you would file a PowerApp PDF.
FAQ
Does a PowerApp receipt mean the meter must accept the token?
No. Used, Old, Invalid, and CRC errors are meter-side or protocol-side. The receipt still proves payment. Retype once, confirm you are on the correct CIU, then stop spraying the same digits. CRC on some NURI meters is a known ugly case that needs ECG’s upgrade path, not a second purchase.
Can I use last month’s unused token today?
If no newer token has been loaded, often yes. If you bought again in between, the meter may call the first one Old. History exists so you load tokens in order and you do not buy a third while two sit in Screenshots.
PowerApp will not open Transactions. Am I stuck?
You are stuck in the app, not on the grid. Read SMS. If there is no token and no debit, vend on *226# or *714*22#. If there is a debit, sit on it. This article cannot refund you and should not talk you into a duplicate.
Should I delete old receipts to save space?
Keep at least the last few successful tokens and any disputed pending row. Storage is cheaper than a district-office argument with no evidence.
History is a brake pedal. Use it before the accelerator. The LCD is still the only display that means the house has power.
