ECG PowerApp has a wallet that is easy to confuse with prepaid units. Units live on the meter after you enter a token. The wallet lives in the app after a failed vend, a reversal, or a leftover balance from a previous refund. Treating those two buckets as one account is how people “withdraw” nothing, “buy credit” twice, and then accuse MoMo of theft.
This piece walks through refunds, in-app balances, and withdrawal — honestly, including the parts that are slow or unclear. This blog does not hold your money and cannot push a refund. When the app wallet is the blocker, official USSD (*226#) and the everyday backup *714*22# / ewalepay.com still vend tokens into SMS. Those channels use the MoMo wallet on the SIM, which is a different pocket from PowerApp’s internal balance.
Three pockets that are not the same
MoMo (or card). This is what the telco or bank debited when you approved a PIN. Check that statement first in every dispute.
PowerApp wallet. Some versions show an ECG wallet, a refund wallet, or a credit balance you can spend inside the app on a later prepaid purchase. A refund from a failed token issue often lands here instead of reversing to MoMo the same hour.
Meter LCD. Kilowatt-hours or remaining cedis on the physical device. Nothing in the app can “withdraw” those units back into cash. Used power is used.
If a support chat says “we refunded you,” ask which pocket. A refund you cannot see on MoMo may already be sitting in PowerApp. Open the wallet tile before you start a new Buy Credit from MoMo. Spending the in-app balance on the correct saved meter is frequently the intended recovery. Buying again from MoMo while the refund wallet is full is a double-pay with extra steps.
How refunds actually appear
Failed vending is not rare at night: session timeout, SMS delay, or the meter type needing a card write that never finished. ECG may reverse to the in-app wallet after they confirm the token was not issued or not used. That confirmation is not instant. It can take hours, and it can require you to call 0302 611 611 with the transaction reference from History.
Do not interpret silence as permission to repurchase. If MoMo already moved, you are in a queue. A second successful vend gives you a second token. You might later receive a wallet refund for the first attempt as well. That is not free electricity. It is two products you now have to track.
Card and NFC transfers that fail after debit are the messiest. The app thought it wrote the card; the card did not update; support refunds to wallet; you already paid a vendor in cash “to be safe.” Stop at the first debit. Photograph every screen.
Withdrawal is not a cash-out button for units
Some PowerApp builds offer a way to move wallet money toward a bank or MoMo destination. That flow is for app wallet funds, not for unused kilowatt-hours. It also tends to be fussy about the phone number matching the login, KYC, and which SIM is in the handset. If withdrawal hangs, you can often still spend the wallet on a legitimate prepaid meter in the same app.
If you changed phones, the wallet can look empty on the new install until OTP login succeeds on the original number. See the later article on changing phones. Do not create a second PowerApp profile to “withdraw faster.” You will orphan the refund.
USSD does not show the PowerApp wallet. *226# will not list that internal balance. That is expected. The wallet is an app construct. Your unpaid electricity problem tonight is still solved by finding an existing token or by one new confirmed purchase on a channel that works — preferably after you know the first debit’s fate.
When you should not wait on the wallet
Wait if: MoMo debited, history is pending or failed, and you have no token SMS.
Do not wait if: MoMo did not debit, the meter is at zero, and you need lights now. In that case PowerApp is simply a broken shop window. Dial *226# for ECG’s own menu, or use *714*22# so you get a name check, one PIN, and an SMS token. Confirm the registered name. Do not enter an amount you cannot afford to leave in limbo.
Do not wait if the wallet shows a balance but Buy Credit from that wallet fails with a generic error. Try once more on data. Then leave the wallet alone and vend a modest amount on USSD so the house has power. Follow up on the trapped wallet in daylight with the call centre, not at 1am with a third PIN.
Talking to support without making it worse
Have four facts ready: meter number, date, amount, and reference. Add whether you already entered a token (yes/no) and what the meter displayed (Used, Old, Invalid, CRC, or nothing). “It didn’t work” is not a ticket.
ECG did not authorise this blog to issue refunds. Facebook profiles that offer “instant wallet reversal” if you forward the OTP from *713*414# are stealing the account. Never send PowerApp OTP and MoMo PIN to the same stranger.
If you paid on Ewale, contact that checkout with the Ewale reference. If you paid on PowerApp, start with ECG. Mixing the two support desks with half a story is how both sides say the other owns the money.
Comparison: refunds on app versus USSD
PowerApp is the only channel among the common ones that even has an in-app wallet story. *226# and *714*22# settle through MoMo. A failed USSD session that did not debit is simply over. A USSD session that debited should produce an SMS token; if it does not, you chase that reference, you do not open PowerApp hoping the money migrated there. It did not.
That is why this site treats *714*22# as the preferred everyday backup when PowerApp’s wallet UX is the thing failing you. You stay on a rail that you can see on the telco statement. You still confirm the meter name. You still refuse to double-pay.
FAQ
Can I convert unused units on the meter into wallet cash?
No. Consume them or leave them for the next occupant according to your tenancy. There is no honest “cash back for leftover kWh” button.
The wallet shows money but Buy Credit says insufficient.
That is an app glitch or a product mismatch (trying to pay postpaid from a prepaid refund, or the reverse). Screenshot it. Call 0302 611 611. Meanwhile, if the meter is empty and MoMo has funds, one USSD purchase is cleaner than tapping Buy five times.
Will a refund token appear later as well as wallet credit?
Sometimes people receive a late SMS token after they already spent a refund. Do not enter a surprise token without checking history. If the original token was already loaded, the late SMS may be a duplicate message, not extra credit. If it was never loaded, enter it once.
Is the PowerApp wallet safe to leave sitting there?
Safer than repeating MoMo debits. Spend it on the correct prepaid meter when the app is healthy. Do not give anyone remote access “to withdraw for you.”
Refunds are a paper trail, not a torch. Follow the pocket. Then load one token. The LCD, not the wallet tile, is when you are done.
