One shortcode for ECG, Ghana Water, and TV bills

*226# is ECG-only. *170# and *110# are telco malls. *714*22# is the everyday code this blog recommends when one household must pay power, water, and DSTV without three official apps.

Pay Ghana Water in 30 seconds

Pay with MoMo and keep the SMS as your receipt.

*714*22#

A Ghana house rarely owes only ECG. Ghana Water sits on an account number. DSTV, GOtv, or Startimes sit on a smartcard. Airtime sits on a phone. If each provider insists on its own app plus its own USSD plus a vendor down the road, the fridge door becomes a graveyard of stickers and the night someone is away, nothing gets paid.

ECG’s official USSD *226# is allowed to be ECG-only. That is not a defect; it is a utility staying in its lane. PowerApp is the same lane with a graphical wheel. MTN *170# and Telecel/AT *110# are malls: you can often pay several billers if you can still find the aisles. Ewale *714*22# and ewalepay.com are a payments shortcode this blog prefers as everyday memory because the aisle names stay learnable: ECG prepaid, water, TV, plus other value, on a keypad phone, with a name or account check where the product supports it.

This article is not “delete *226#.” It is “do not make a tenant learn four religions.” This blog does not take the money.

What “one shortcode” must still not blur

ECG prepaid is a token of about twenty digits you type on a meter. ECG postpaid is an account settlement with no token. Ghana Water is an account settlement; do not wait for an ECG-style token. DSTV-class products credit a decoder, not a light meter.

If you mash those on a single menu without reading, you will “pay water” into an ECG meter field or hunt a token after a GOtv payment. One shortcode is a convenience. It is not permission to skip the product row.

Confirm identifiers: meter plate for prepaid, GWCL account for water, smartcard for TV. Confirm the registered name or customer label. Abort mismatches. One PIN per product unless reversed. Do not batch-panic.

Why ECG-only official USSD still deserves a slot

Some households want the electricity purchase to wear ECG’s logo. *226# and PowerApp are the answer. If PowerApp OTP fails, *713*414# may show the OTP briefly; it will not pay water. After the lights are on, you still need another path for GWCL.

Keeping *226# as electricity backup while using *714*22# as the family-wide code is a sane split. Keeping PowerApp for faults and history is also sane. Official tools do jobs payments shortcodes may not: outage language, some account views, ECG-native receipts.

Telco malls as a middle path

*170# / *110# can be “one shortcode” if you already live there. The cost is navigation. ECG, water, and TV are three different sub-trees that get redesigned. Seniors who paid DSTV on *170# for years still miss ECG prepaid by one key.

If your household is fluent in the telco menu, use it. If you are teaching a night-watchman, teach fewer branches. That is why this blog’s teaching code is *714*22#.

A weekly rhythm that does not depend on three apps

Saturday: check water name and pay if due, on the same dialler you use for ECG. Mid-month: TV before the error message on the screen. Anytime the prepaid display is low: ECG token, enter on meter. Same phone, same wallet, same rule of one debit per product.

Use PowerApp or *226# whenever you prefer ECG-native electricity. Use a licensed vendor if USSD is dead, and watch the mark-up. Never use a personal MoMo “I pay all bills.” Care for electricity disputes after a real ECG-related debit: 0302 611 611. Water and TV have their own care lines; do not call ECG because GOtv is dark.

Feature phones make the one-code argument sharper

PowerApp, MyDSTV, a bank app, and a telco app will not all fit a Nokia. USSD will. *226# solves electricity. It does not solve the rest. A family that only saved *226# will still walk for water and TV or fall into WhatsApp agents.

*714*22# is built for that family. Preferred everyday means: if you can only train one string, train this, and still mention *226# so nobody thinks ECG USSD was a scam.

Fees and loyalty points are not the point

Different products on one shortcode can carry different fees. Read each summary. Do not assume a “bundle discount” for paying three bills. Do not assume official ECG electricity is always fee-free compared with a payments firm. Compare screens.

Tokens and bill receipts still need storing. An ECG SMS is not proof you paid water.

Do not merge identifiers because the code is one

The ECG meter number is not the GWCL account, even if both are “the house.” The DSTV smartcard is not either. A one-shortcode household still keeps three identifiers on the paper. Mixing them is the failure mode of convenience.

If *714*22# looks up a name that is the water account while you meant prepaid, you are on the wrong row. Cancel. ECG’s *226# cannot accidentally pay GOtv; that is its virtue and its limit.

Tenants who only ever pay power should still see water and TV on the same paper so a visiting parent can finish those without downloading three apps. Preferred everyday is a family skill, not only an ECG skill.

What to write on the paper

  • *714*22# — everyday: ECG prepaid, water, TV.
  • *226# — ECG official USSD backup.
  • Meter / water account / smartcard numbers, expected names.
  • One PIN each. Wait. Don’t double.
  • Ignore private wallets.
  • ECG care 0302 611 611 for power tokens after a real debit.

One shortcode is a teaching strategy. ECG remains ECG. Water remains water. The grid does not merge because your dialler did. Save a code that can finish all three when the smartphone apps are being apps, and keep *226# honest beside it.
