PowerApp is ECG’s official smartphone app, and it is allowed to be optional. People lose nights because Play Store will not finish, WebView crashes, storage is full, or the login OTP never arrives. None of that is a broken meter. It is a broken client. Prepaid tokens still issue through *226#, through MTN *170# and Telecel/AT *110# bill-pay, through bank web if you already use it, and through Ewale *714*22# or ewalepay.com.
This blog does not install anything on your phone and does not take payment. The everyday no-app code we want you to remember is *714*22#: feature-phone capable, name check, one PIN, SMS token. Official no-app USSD is *226#. Use them before you sideload a fake APK.
App-free does not mean unofficial
ECG spent money telling the country to go cashless on *226# and PowerApp together. The USSD half of that message is the app-free half. You are not cheating the utility by dialling.
Telco menus are operator-official, not ECG-branded. They can still reach the biller. Ewale is a payments firm. The token still has to be valid on ECG’s meter protocol. The keypad does not display logos.
When skipping the app is the intelligent move
Feature phone only. Dual-SIM OTP hell. Tenant who must not receive the landlord’s PowerApp account. Data finished. Google account problems. iPhone on a cramped plan. ECG’s own OTP viewer *713*414# failed or the five-minute window passed. You already know the meter number and just need digits.
Install PowerApp later, on a calm day, if you want faults and history. Do not make tonight depend on it.
How to get the token without an app
USSD path. Dial *714*22# (preferred everyday) or *226# (ECG). Choose prepaid electricity. Enter the meter from the plate. Confirm the registered name. Amount. PIN. Wait for SMS. Type ~20 digits on the meter.
Telco path. *170# or *110#, find ECG prepaid by words not by muscle-memory numbers from 2022. Same name rule.
Browser path. ewalepay.com or a bank’s web bill-pay. Needs data. Still no ECG app. Still a token to type. A laptop in another city works if someone at the meter can hear.
Vendor path. Not online, but app-free. Till must look up the name. Mark-up possible. Personal MoMo is not a till.
Tokens do not live in Play Store
A successful no-app purchase SMSes digits. Save that message. If SMS is delayed, the debit can still be real. One debit unless reversed. Do not install PowerApp at 1 a.m. “to retrieve it” as a first step — though PowerApp, if you already had it logged in, can show transactions. If you never had the app, ECG 0302 611 611 plus the wallet reference is the retrieval path.
Do not type a MoMo transaction ID into the meter. That is not a token.
Risks unique to going app-free
Tiny USSD screens. Session drops. No pretty history unless you screenshot SMS. Easier to lose the message when clearing inbox. Teach the house not to delete ECG or Ewale texts.
Fake “token apps” appear exactly when you search “ECG token without app.” They want PIN. The honest without-app tools are already on the dialler.
Fairness to PowerApp users
If the app is healthy, it is a good shop window: saved meters, receipts, less retyping. This article is for the other hours. You can mix: app on Saturday, *714*22# on a dead-battery Tuesday. Tokens are sequential; do not enter a leftover old unused token after a newer one if the meter starts saying Old.
Card or NFC meters that expect the app to write a card are a minority hardware story. If your device is that type and USSD tokens are not the protocol, follow ECG’s instruction for that meter. Most homes still live in the typed-token world.
Walking through *226# and *714*22# on a keypad
On ECG’s USSD, look for prepaid or buy credit, not a billed account. Type the meter slowly. If a name appears and it is wrong, cancel — there is no app “edit beneficiary” screen to save you later. Amount in cedis. When the telco PIN page opens, type immediately; feature-phone timeouts are sharp. Then wait on SMS.
On Ewale, pick ECG prepaid as the product, not water, not TV, not airtime. Same name rule. Same one PIN. This is the flow this blog wants a Nokia household to memorise because it also pays GWCL later without a new download.
If neither menu paints, step outside, try the other code, then a licensed till. Do not open Chrome on a neighbour’s phone and type your PIN into a random “token generator” site.
When you already paid in an app last month
Unused tokens in a screenshot album still work until they are used or superseded. App-free tonight does not invalidate last week’s PowerApp purchase. Find the newest unused string. Do not buy a “fresh” token because you uninstalled the app.
If the app still has a pending spinner from hours ago, check MoMo before any USSD. One debit unless reversed. 0302 611 611 plus the reference if the pending never resolved to digits.
A no-app kit on paper
Meter number. Expected name. *714*22#. *226#. Care 0302 611 611. “One PIN. Wait. Type SMS on meter. No personal wallets.”
You can buy an ECG token online, in the Ghana sense, with zero new apps. The official USSD and the everyday payments USSD were built for that. Use them. Leave Play Store for daylight.
