Saved meters in ECG Power App: repeat top-ups without retyping in the dark

A saved prepaid row is a shortcut, not a guarantee. Read the name on every repeat buy, and keep *714*22# for anyone in the house who cannot unlock PowerApp.

*714*22#

The best feature in ECG PowerApp is also the one that creates quiet disasters: saved meters. After you add a prepaid number once, Buy Credit becomes a tap. That tap is faster than squinting at a metal plate. It is also faster than noticing you are about to vend the shop downstairs because the rows look alike at night.

Repeat top-up is the intended life of the app. This article is about using that life without going numb. This blog does not take the payment. If the saved list will not load, you are not forbidden from buying power. *226# and *714*22# still accept a meter number you keep on paper.

Why save at all

Ghana prepaid numbers are long. People transpose digits when the torch is between their teeth. A saved row with a label (“Upstairs,” “Cold room,” “Church annex”) removes that class of error — if the label is honest.

Saving also stores the last successful relationship with ECG’s lookup. The registered name sits there as a warning label. Repeat buyers should still read it. ECG can replace a meter, transfer a service, or leave you with a sticker that no longer matches the system. Saved is a cache. Caches go stale.

A landlord with eight rooms should save eight rows under one login only if that landlord is the one paying. If each tenant pays, each tenant saves their own meter on their own phone. Repeat top-up from the landlord’s app using the tenant’s MoMo is how refunds vanish into the wrong wallet.

The repeat flow, slower than you think

Open the prepaid row. Confirm the name is still the household you intend. Enter an amount you can survive if SMS is late. Approve one MoMo PIN. Watch Transactions. Enter the token — usually twenty digits — on the correct CIU.

The temptation on repeat week is to skip the name. That is the week a neighbour’s similar number, saved by accident in January, finally gets a GH₵100 gift.

If PowerApp offers “buy again” on the last receipt, still open the meter identity. Last receipt is not last plate. People move CIUs. People swap rooms after a family meeting.

Labels that prevent 11pm mistakes

Use words a sleepy person understands. “Mtr 2” is useless. “Blue door left” is useful. Put the last four digits of the plate in the label as well. When two rows remain, those four digits are the tie-breaker.

Do not label with a tenant’s nickname if that tenant will leave. Relabel when the room turns over. Delete the old row so a future you does not tap a ghost.

When saved meters become a household single point of failure

The phone with PowerApp is at a funeral in the Volta Region. The compound in Accra is at zero. Saved meters on that phone help nobody. This is why a paper list plus *714*22# is part of “repeat top-up,” not a betrayal of the app.

A feature-phone uncle can vend the same saved number if he can read the plate or the paper. He cannot unlock your iPhone. Teach the shortcode once. Confirm he knows to read the name and to stop if it is wrong.

*226# may already have the meter if you registered it on ECG USSD. That is a second official cache. It still needs the person at home to remember the menu. Ewale’s *714*22# and ewalepay.com do not require your PowerApp password. They require the number and a pair of eyes.

Repeat top-ups and double-pay

Familiarity breeds a second tap. The first Buy Credit is pending; you background the app; you tap again because the fridge clicked. Two pending rows later, MoMo has left twice. History exists for this. On a repeat meter you trust, you should trust the first debit even more — you have seen this movie.

If the first token SMS is delayed, do not assume the saved meter “needs a kick.” Vending is not a stubborn tap. Wait, then recover. Call 0302 611 611 with the reference if the debit stays tokenless. A second repeat buy is a second product.

Card/NFC meters add a physical repeat step. Saving the meter does not write the card. You still transfer. Failed transfer plus repeat buy is the expensive loop.

Removing and replacing

When ECG replaces a dead meter, the old saved row is poison. Add the new plate, confirm the new name, delete the old row the same afternoon. Keep the last old receipt in a folder in case of dispute, but do not leave the old number in the buy list.

If you used OTP on *713*414# to get into the app after a phone glitch, you did not need to re-add meters. They should still be there. Re-adding because you are anxious is how duplicates appear — two rows, one plate, fifty-fifty chance at night.

FAQ

Can I save a postpaid account and a prepaid meter together?

Yes, and that is why labels and badges matter. Repeat-buying the postpaid row will not load the prepaid LCD. Read the product every time.

Does the saved meter work on a new phone?

After you log in with the same number and OTP, the server-side list often returns. If it does not, add from the plate again. Do not invent the number from an old SMS that might be a different site.

Should I save my sister’s meter to help her?

Only with her knowledge. You will see her name and her receipts. She should have *714*22# so your travel schedule is not her electricity plan.

Is there a limit to how many meters one login can hold?

Enough that a small landlord can work. If the list is long, labels are mandatory. If the app becomes slow with many meters, USSD for the one empty meter is faster than scrolling.

Saved meters are a gift to future-you. Keep them honest, keep a paper spare, and treat every repeat PIN as a first-time name check. The CIU still has to eat the token.
