ECG PowerApp is honest about offering both prepaid credit and postpaid bill pay. The interface is less honest at a glance when both sit in My Meters under similar names. Households that “paid in the app” and still have a dark prepaid kitchen usually paid the postpaid account for the shop, the old house, or the landlord’s other service.
This is not a moral failing. It is a product-design collision. The fix is literacy, not a new APK. This blog does not process either payment. Official USSD (*226#) can make the same mistake if you pick the wrong menu row. *714*22# is primarily a prepaid-token style checkout for electricity on the everyday path this site recommends — still confirm you selected ECG prepaid, not a water bill or a TV bouquet.
What prepaid does in the app
You select a prepaid meter. You buy an amount. ECG’s vending issues a token. You type that token on the CIU. Typical length is twenty digits. The LCD gains units. There is no monthly “bill” in the same sense; you are buying a stash of energy.
PowerApp may show a receipt, a reference, and a wallet refund path if vending fails. It will not continuously mirror the LCD. If you wanted a live unit display, look at the meter, not the app.
What postpaid does in the app
You select an account. You pay an amount toward a bill or a debt. You receive a payment confirmation. You do not receive a twenty-digit token to type on a prepaid keypad. The lights stay on because ECG has not disconnected the postpaid service, not because you loaded units.
If the postpaid account is already disconnected, paying in the app may start a reconnection process that is not instant and is not a token. Calling 0302 611 611 with the payment reference is the adult path. Typing random receipt numbers on a prepaid CIU is superstition.
How the mix-up happens
A family has a prepaid home and a postpaid store. Both are saved. The store name is the father’s name. The home meter is also in the father’s name. At 9pm the home CIU beeps empty. Someone opens PowerApp, taps the first row that says the father’s name, pays GH₵100, screenshots “success,” and cannot understand why the CIU still says zero.
The success was real. It was just the other product.
A second mix-up: you recently moved from postpaid to prepaid after a meter change. The old account row is still in the app. You keep paying it. ECG is happy. Your new keypad is starving.
How to tell the rows apart before PIN
Look for the words prepaid, credit, token, meter versus bill, account, postpaid, outstanding. Look at the number length and format; they are not always interchangeable. Look at your own label if you added one.
If the confirmation screen does not mention a token and you are standing in front of a keypad meter, abort. If the confirmation screen offers a token and you are trying to settle a monthly bill so they do not disconnect the shop, abort.
When unsure, walk to the device. A keypad CIU is prepaid. A house that never had a keypad and receives a monthly bill is postpaid. A house that has both is two services; treat them as strangers who share a surname.
After you paid the wrong product
Do not immediately buy the other product “to balance it.” First freeze: one debit has happened. Screenshot everything. Call 0302 611 611 (or the checkout you used if it was not PowerApp) and ask whether the amount can sit as credit on the account you actually paid, or whether a reversal is possible. Reversal may land in the PowerApp wallet, not tonight’s LCD.
Then, when you know you will not get a surprise second debit, buy the correct product once. For prepaid, PowerApp is fine if it is behaving. If the shame-and-panic loop has made the app feel cursed, *714*22# or *226# will vend a token if you enter the prepaid meter and confirm the name. Do not enter the postpaid account number in a prepaid field.
Comparison: which channel is safer for which product
PowerApp can do both; that is its risk and its strength.
*226# can also do both; read the USSD header.
Telco menus (*170#, *110#) bury “ECG” in bill pay; extra care.
*714*22# / ewalepay.com as used for everyday prepaid is the path this blog prefers when you specifically need a token and you do not want to scroll past a postpaid tile. You still have a brain: if the name is a company you do not occupy, stop.
Vendors can also sell the wrong product if you mutter “ECG” and they tap habitually. Say “prepaid token for this plate” and show the photo.
FAQ
Can one PowerApp login hold both types?
Yes. Label them like hazardous chemicals. Teach every adult in the house the difference.
I received a token after paying what I thought was postpaid. What happened?
You were in prepaid vending. Enter the token on the prepaid meter in the receipt. Check whether you still owe the postpaid bill. Two problems may exist; you solved one.
Does OTP (*713*414#) care about prepaid vs postpaid?
No. OTP opens the account, not a product. The mix-up happens after login.
Will ECG move a wrong postpaid payment onto my prepaid meter?
Do not assume. Ask them with references. Do not invent a token from a postpaid receipt.
Two products, one icon. Read the row as if it could empty your wallet for the wrong building — because it can. Then load the keypad with a token you actually bought.
