Google Play is infrastructure for ECG PowerApp, not for the grid. A phone that cannot update, download, or verify the official listing is a phone that should stop arguing with Play Protect and should start a USSD session. Confusing those layers is how people spend an hour on “clear cache” while the freezer thaws.
This is a comparison of a store-dependent official app against store-independent official and practical USSD. This blog is not in that chain. It does not host an APK and does not take MoMo. Prefer the official listing when you can. Prefer *714*22# as the everyday backup when you cannot. Keep *226# as ECG’s own dialler door.
What Play Store is responsible for
Identity of the publisher (Electricity Company of Ghana). Delivery of the binary. Updates that fix payment bugs. A malware scan that is imperfect but better than Telegram.
Play Store is not responsible for OTP SMS, for token generation, or for your meter’s LCD. When the listing says “pending download,” ECG’s vending engine is not pending. You can leave the store and still buy.
Storage full, Google account in a region mess, family-link restrictions, Huawei without GMS, ancient Android — all of these are Play problems. The prepaid meter does not speak Google.
What USSD is responsible for
A session on the telco signalling channel. A menu. A meter number. A name check (on decent implementations). A MoMo PIN. An SMS token.
*226# is ECG’s branded version of that idea. *714*22# is a payments shortcode that many households already use for other bills. *170# and *110# are operator malls with an ECG stall somewhere in the back.
USSD will not give you an in-app refund wallet or a fault-photo form. Tonight that is acceptable.
The false compromise: sideload the Play file
People extract an APK from a friend whose Play Store works. That file may be old, modified, or a lookalike. Paying through it is how PINs leak. If Play Store on your phone is broken, your job is USSD, not amateur DevOps.
iPhone users have the same lesson with TestFlight rumours and Safari configuration profiles. App Store or USSD. Nothing in the middle.
When the app is installed but Play is still in the way
Some PowerApp builds lean on Play Services for push, SafetyNet-style checks, or payment modules. A device with a half-working Play Store can open the icon and fail at PIN. That failure looks like ECG. It is still a Google stack issue.
Update WebView from Play if you can. If you cannot, you are in the USSD column. Do not clear all data on PowerApp as a ritual unless you are ready to OTP again via *713*414# and to lose a local screenshot folder.
How the backups differ from each other
ECG *226#: best answer when someone insists on the utility’s own code. Session length is the weakness. Register meters before the crisis if the menu requires it.
Ewale *714*22#: best everyday memory. Name, amount, PIN, SMS. Works on a keypad phone that has never seen Play Store. ewalepay.com is the browser twin when data exists but Play does not.
Telco menus: fine if you already know the exact submenu and can tell prepaid from postpaid.
Call centre 0302 611 611: not a vending channel. Use it when a debit is missing a token, not as a substitute for Play Store support.
A practical split for a household
One smartphone keeps PowerApp updated on days when Play Store works. Everyone else knows the shortcode. The meter number is on paper. The registered name is known. Repeat Play Store drama does not become a weekly tax.
If you are the only person who can pass Google’s family controls, you are a single point of failure. USSD democratises vending. That is a feature.
What “updated” actually buys you
An updated PowerApp from Play Store can fix a broken payment module, a crash on a new Android version, or a receipt screen that never loads. Those are real reasons to keep the listing healthy on a weekday. They are not reasons to refuse USSD while the update bar sits at 43 percent and the CIU is already at zero.
Updates also change menus. After a store update, the Buy Credit tile may move. A relative who only memorised last year’s icon layout will freeze. The shortcode layout on *714*22# changes less often in the heat of the moment: meter, name, amount, PIN. Teach both, but do not make the household wait on Google’s CDN.
If Play Store offers an update during a payment, postpone it. An update that kills the activity mid-PIN is a classic way to lose the on-screen token while MoMo still leaves. Finish the debit or confirm there was none. Then update. Then open history. This blog still cannot take the PIN for you.
FAQ
Play Store downloaded the app. Do I still need a backup?
Yes. Downloads expire into login issues. Backups are for OTP and data, not only for first install.
Can I use the web Play Store on a computer to send the app?
Sometimes. It still needs a Google account on the phone and enough storage. If that chain is flaky, you will finish faster on *714*22#.
Does ECG charge more on USSD than in the Play app?
Read the confirmation that day. Do not pick a channel because of a 2022 Facebook rumour. Pick the channel that will complete one debit.
Play says the app is unavailable in my country.
Travelling account, VPN, or a listing glitch. You are standing in Ghana with a Ghana meter. USSD does not check Play country.
Play Store is a shop for software. Prepaid is a shop for tokens. When the first shop is closed, walk into the second. Type the digits. Confirm the name. Do not double-pay while Google syncs.
