Buy ECG prepaid credit with Mobile Money inside the Power App

PowerApp can take MTN MoMo, Telecel Cash, or AT Money, then show a token you still type on the meter. Confirm the name, approve one PIN, and fall back to *714*22# if the wallet prompt never appears.

Buy ECG prepaid credit in 30 seconds

Pay with MoMo and get your token by SMS instantly.

*714*22#

Buying prepaid inside ECG PowerApp with Mobile Money is the path most Ghanaian customers actually want: saved meter, amount in cedis, telco PIN, SMS token. It fails in small, expensive ways when the PIN prompt is on the wrong SIM, when the amount is too small for the vending rule, or when someone repeats Buy Credit because the spinner lasted thirty seconds.

MoMo is not unique to PowerApp. ECG’s *226#, operator menus, vendors, and *714*22# all sit on the same wallets. The app is only a shop window with a logo. This blog is not a shop. It cannot take your PIN. After a successful debit you should still walk to the CIU with a token that is usually twenty digits.

Before you tap Buy Credit

Open the prepaid meter, not a postpaid account. Read the registered name. If it is wrong, cancel. Amounts should be what you can afford to leave pending if SMS is slow — not the last pesewas in the wallet, and not a week’s takings on a shared shop meter.

Check the MoMo balance on the same number you expect the prompt to hit. PowerApp does not contain your MoMo balance. A “insufficient funds” from the telco after you already waited on ECG’s spinner is a wasted session, not a stolen token.

If you are on a dual-SIM phone, know which SIM holds the wallet. MTN MoMo on SIM 1 will not approve a prompt that ECG sent toward a Telecel number you typed in a previous screen. Match wallet, login, and prompt.

The PIN belongs on the telco screen

A legitimate flow looks like this: PowerApp shows amount and meter; you confirm; the telco USSD or MoMo app asks for PIN; you enter it; you return to PowerApp or to SMS. Anyone in a Facebook comment thread who asks you to “send the MoMo PIN so we can load it from headquarters” is not ECG. ECG’s call centre is 0302 611 611, and they do not need your PIN.

Do not photograph the PIN. Do not type it into PowerApp itself unless a very clear in-app field is the official prompt for that version — even then, prefer the telco prompt. After PIN, wait. Pending is not failure.

What success looks like

Transactions shows a completed prepaid purchase. SMS contains a token (and often the meter number). You enter the token on the keypad, no spaces, then the confirm key. The LCD should add units. If the LCD does not change, you have a meter-entry problem or a used/old/invalid/CRC story, not a missing MoMo debit. Do not buy again to “push” the first token.

If PowerApp says success and SMS is empty, screenshot the in-app token. It is still the product. If both are empty and MoMo moved, you have a vending delay. Sit on it. Call ECG with the reference in daylight if it stays empty. A second MoMo PIN on *714*22# “just in case” is how you donate extra cedis to a second token you then have to manage.

When the MoMo prompt never arrives

The app can fail to hand off to the wallet. Causes include no data, ECG payment gateway timeout, a wallet that is frozen, a limit, or a handset where USSD prompts are suppressed by a third-party dialler.

Retry once after you confirm there was no debit. If the prompt is the problem, the app is the wrong tool tonight. Dial *226# and pay ECG there, or dial *714*22#, enter the meter, confirm the name, pay the wallet you actually use. ewalepay.com is the same backup on a browser if data works but PowerApp’s payment module does not.

Operator bill-pay (*170#, *110#) can also reach an ECG biller. Read whether you are in prepaid vending or postpaid bill pay. The PIN still goes to the telco. The name still has to be yours.

Fees, limits, and folklore

Totals on the confirmation screen are the only numbers that matter. Official ECG channels have at times advertised cashless routes without some extra telco add-ons; third-party totals can differ. This article will not promise a tariff. If the confirmation is higher than you like, cancel. Cancelling before PIN is free. Cancelling after debit is a refund story.

Very small amounts may be rejected by vending rules. Very large amounts on a tenant meter create theft and argument risk. Split a huge shop top-up only if you understand you may receive two tokens and must enter both, in order, without panicking at the first LCD change.

MoMo nightly limits exist. If the wallet refuses, that is not an empty meter. Use another wallet you control, or wait. Do not hand cash plus PIN to a neighbour to “use their limit.”

After MoMo, you still have a job

Prepaid credit is not airtime. It does not land as a phone balance. Type the token. If the meter is a card/NFC type, the app’s transfer step is extra work — and a failed write is not a reason to MoMo again. For ordinary keypad meters, treat NFC as irrelevant.

Save the SMS. Landlords who collect proof should get the screenshot, not remote access to the MoMo app. If you paid for a relative in another town, they still need the twenty digits. Reading the digits slowly on a call is fine. Sending the screenshot is better. Sending your PowerApp login is not.

FAQ

Can I use someone else’s MoMo to buy for my meter in PowerApp?

Only if their wallet will receive the prompt and they are standing there to enter the PIN. The token still follows the meter number you confirmed. Do not save their wallet inside a story that lets them control your ECG login.

PowerApp charged MoMo but shows postpaid.

You picked the wrong saved item. Call 0302 611 611 with the receipt. Do not enter random digits on the prepaid CIU; there may be no token. Next time read the badge on the row.

Is *714*22# cheaper than the app?

Compare confirmation screens that day. Prefer *714*22# when the app’s MoMo hand-off is the failure, not because of a rumour about fees. Name check and a single PIN are the practical reasons.

The telco says transaction successful, PowerApp still spins.

Believe the wallet and the SMS first. Kill the app. Open history later. If a token is already in SMS, go to the meter. The spinner is not a second product.

MoMo inside PowerApp is ordinary Ghana checkout with an ECG wrapper. Confirm the name, one PIN, one token, then the keypad. When the wrapper sticks, the shortcode is not a downgrade.

Dial Ewale now

Keep *714*22# saved. It is the backup that works when an app, OTP, or data fails. One shortcode also pays Ghana Water and TV bills.
