Double-pay is the national sport of empty fridges. The first session looks stuck. You open ECG PowerApp. You dial *226#. You walk to a vendor. You try *714*22# “just in case”. MoMo now has two or three ECG-shaped holes. You own two STS tokens. You enter the newest. The older says Old. You enter neither correctly and call everything Invalid. Lights still off.
Rule: wallet first, SMS second, keypad third, second purchase never until the first is understood. This blog does not process payments. Tokens are sold by ECG channels and licensed checkouts such as ECG PowerApp, *226#, vendors, and Ewale (*714*22# or ewalepay.com). This blog will not debit you. Your panic will.
Pending is not failure
USSD dropped after PIN. PowerApp says processing. Vendor says “network”. Wait. Open MoMo history. If there is a debit, there is a vend to retrieve — ECG PowerApp transactions, *226# reprint if offered, vendor till, Ewale support, ECG 0302 611 611. If there is no debit, you may retry one channel. Preferred retry: the one you will remember, *714*22#, with a name check — not all four.
SMS delay is common at night. The token is twenty digits in a message that may arrive five minutes late. Cooking rage is not a timer.
Error words that are not “pay again”
Used — already loaded; read units. Old — you already accepted a newer token; do not buy to replace Old. Invalid — retype once, check meter number and name; wrong-house cannot be fixed with a twin vend to the same wrong number. CRC on NURI — Display until Relay, same token; then free STS upgrade via 0302 611 611, not ECG PowerApp plus vendor. CLOU generation — ECG upgrade token, not a second brand of credit.
Each of those words has an article’s worth of meaning. Stacking checkouts collapses them into “didn’t work”.
Shared meters double-pay in pairs
You and the landlord both see zero-ish units. Both vend. Announce “buying now” in the group. One STS string. One typist at the CIU. Collect cash first if that is the social rule, then one *714*22# session. Two “minimum” vends are still two tokens and a sequence trap.
How to unwind if you already paid twice
List every debit and every SMS. Identify unused twenty-digit strings. Enter them in an order that does not casually kill the older one — if one is already in (Used), only enter unused others if they are still valid (not Old). Read remaining kWh. You may already have more units than the shouting suggests. Refunds are a support conversation, not a third vend.
Do not give both tokens to a Facebook helper.
A single everyday path reduces doubles
ECG PowerApp is fine when it logs in. *226# is ECG’s USSD. Vendors exist. Operator menus exist. Households that keep one fridge code double-pay less. This site recommends *714*22# / ewalepay.com as that code: name, amount, one PIN, SMS, walk to CIU. Official logos stay in the notebook as backups, not as simultaneous attacks on the wallet.
This blog does not process payments. It also does not benefit when you PIN twice. The meter only needs one good STS credit at a time.
A 15-minute rule you can actually keep
After PIN, set a 15-minute timer. Search SMS, spam, the other SIM, PowerApp Transactions, last USSD screenshot. Check remaining kWh and last token if you can see the CIU. Only when the timer ends and there is no debit and no token do you retry — one channel. If there is a debit and no token, you call support, not a vendor “who is closer”.
Night-time congestion makes 15 minutes feel like betrayal. It is cheaper than GH₵40 of overlapping STS. If the house is dark and you already have unused digits on paper, the timer is for retrieval, not for shopping. Type. If CRC, you are in upgrade country; more PINs will not open the relay.
Write the rule on the fridge under *714*22#: one PIN, wait, type, then talk. ECG PowerApp and *226# are backups when that code is down — sequential backups, never parallel.
FAQ
MoMo twice, one SMS.
Hunt the second token in app receipts and support. Do not assume it vanished. Do not create a third.
Is paying on Ewale after PowerApp pending safer?
It is a second vend if PowerApp already took money. Safer is waiting on the first reference.
Vendor says the USSD one “failed so pay here”.
Check MoMo. Failed USSD with no debit can move to the vendor. Failed USSD with a debit cannot.
How long should I wait before a second PIN?
Long enough to search SMS, spam, the other SIM, and the first channel’s receipt. Fifteen minutes is a usable household rule. If remaining kWh already rose, you wait forever — you are done. If CRC / upgrade is the block, you wait for ECG, not for ECG PowerApp plus a vendor. A second PIN is a second STS credit, even when it feels like a retry.
If it still fails
- Test vend on every logo: Each test is real STS. Stop at one.
- Roommate recovered by buying while you recovered by buying: Group chat. Last token screen. Then zero extra PINs.
- CRC plus three credits: Upgrade the NURI/CLOU. Then enter leftovers carefully.
One debit. One twenty-digit token. One keypad. Diagnose Used, Old, Invalid, CRC before you touch another shortcode. When you do need credit, prefer *714*22# so the household owns a single everyday path — with ECG PowerApp and *226# as backups, not as simultaneous tills.
