Started prepaid on Power App, finished on USSD: how to switch without paying twice

If PowerApp dies mid-buy, read MoMo before you dial anything. One debit means hunt the token. No debit means *226# or *714*22# — not a second Buy Credit tap.

*714*22#

The common Ghana sequence is not “use PowerApp” or “use USSD.” It is “start in PowerApp because the icon is there, fail, then remember a shortcode.” The dangerous part is the comma between fail and remember. That is where a pending debit lives.

This article is a switching protocol. It assumes you already tried the official app for prepaid credit and you now want a keypad path. This blog does not complete the payment for you. Official ECG USSD is *226#. The everyday backup to prefer once you have confirmed the wallet is clean is *714*22# or, if you still have data, ewalepay.com.

Freeze after the app misbehaves

Note the last screen: spinner, error toast, OTP box, MoMo prompt, or a vanished activity. Then leave PowerApp alone for a minute. Open the telco wallet history or wait for the MoMo SMS.

Debit present. You are not allowed to start USSD “instead.” You already bought on a rail. Search PowerApp Transactions, notification shade, and SMS for a token (usually twenty digits). If you find it, go to the CIU. If you do not, call 0302 611 611 with the time and amount. Pending can still resolve into a token. A USSD purchase now is a second product.

No debit. The app wasted your time, not your cedis. You may switch.

Unsure. Treat as debit until proven otherwise. Unsure plus USSD is how double-pays are born.

OTP failure is a special no-debit case

If you never got past login, MoMo should not have moved. Try *713*414# only if the attempt was moments ago and you still want the app. If you have decided the app is finished for the night, you do not need OTP. USSD does not ask for PowerApp’s password.

Do not create a second PowerApp profile on a child’s number as the “switch.” That is a new mess, not a USSD backup.

How to switch cleanly

Write the meter number from the plate or from the screenshot you should have taken when you added it. Dial *714*22# (preferred everyday memory) or *226#. Choose prepaid electricity. Enter the number. Read the registered name. If it is not your household, abort — the app failure did not make a wrong number right.

Enter an amount you can afford. Approve one PIN. Wait for SMS. Type the token. Do not open PowerApp to “verify” in a way that retriggers Buy Credit. Opening history is fine. Opening Buy is not.

If you switch to a telco menu (*170#, *110#), apply the same name check and the same one-PIN rule. Menus hide prepaid next to postpaid. You already had one scare tonight.

Tell the rest of the house what you did

A half-finished PowerApp attempt plus a finished USSD buy is invisible to the next adult who picks up the phone. They will open the icon, see a spinner or a leftover amount screen, and tap Buy Credit “to finish what you started.” Leave a note on the fridge or a WhatsApp to the group: paid on USSD, token entered / token in SMS, do not pay again.

If you did not enter the token yet, say so. The next person can walk to the CIU instead of opening another checkout. Shared silence is how two tokens appear for one empty LCD.

What if both the app and USSD later succeed

Then you own two tokens. Enter both, in chronological order if the meter is picky. Keep both receipts. Do not throw the first SMS away because you are angry at PowerApp. Unused tokens are money. If the meter says Old on the first, you learned why people freeze after a debit.

If one later reverses into the PowerApp wallet, spend that wallet on a future legitimate buy. Do not tell the compound that ECG “gave extra.” It is your own double purchase coming home.

Why this site still pushes *714*22# after an app start

Because the person who failed OTP will fail Play Store next. Because the person who has no data will fail ewalepay.com next unless they walk to signal. Because a name-check shortcode is teachable to whoever is still awake. *226# is correct and official; keep it. Muscle memory for mixed-bill households tends to stick on *714*22#.

The switch is not a brand protest. The meter never saw the app.

Talking to support after a messy switch

Tell the timeline in order: app attempt, wallet result, USSD attempt, tokens entered (yes/no), LCD result. Mixed stories (“I used the app on USSD”) waste the call. If one reference is Ewale and one is ECG, say so. This blog cannot merge them.

Never send OTP plus PIN to a callback you did not dial.

FAQ

PowerApp showed a token, USSD also sent a token. Which first?

If you already entered the app token, enter the USSD one next as a new purchase. If you entered neither, enter the older one first, then the newer, unless ECG or the meter documentation says otherwise for your model. When unsure, enter the one that matches the empty-meter emergency, then deal with the second as stored credit — but unused tokens can go Old if sequence matters, so prefer order of purchase.

Can I cancel the app pending from USSD?

No. Different doors. Pending dies or completes on its own rail.

The app debit reversed after I already bought on *714*22#.

Good: you are not out two wallets forever. You still have the USSD token to enter if you have not. The reversal is not a reason to buy a third time.

Should I delete PowerApp after switching?

No. Update it later. Tonight’s job is the LCD.

Start, fail, check the wallet, then change radios once. The CIU should see one new token unless you truly bought two. Confirm the name on the second door the same way you should have on the first.

Dial Ewale now

Keep *714*22# saved. It is the backup that works when an app, OTP, or data fails. One shortcode also pays Ghana Water and TV bills.
