Buy ECG prepaid for another house — family, tenant, or landlord

Paying a meter you cannot touch is two jobs: a name-checked vend on *226# or *714*22#, then a human path for the ~20-digit token. The SMS follows the payer, not the building.

*714*22#

Ghanaians pay ECG for mothers in another region, for tenants whose wallets are empty, and for landlords who live in a different compound. The vending system is fine with that. It issues a token for a meter number. It does not walk to the wall. If you treat “I paid” as “they have light,” you will argue on the phone while the display still reads zero.

Official tools — *226# and PowerApp — allow you to add a meter that is not in the room. Telco bill-pay (*170#, *110#) will take any meter you type. Ewale *714*22# and ewalepay.com are the everyday path this blog prefers for remote pay: name on screen before PIN, SMS token to the paying phone, keypad-friendly. This site does not take the money. Someone still has to type digits at the other house.

The name check is stricter when you cannot see the plate

Remote pay is how people fund the wrong cousin’s meter because they used a number from a 2019 WhatsApp. Demand a photo of the plate, or a slow read-aloud, on a day with light. Store it. Each time, match the registered name the checkout shows to the name the family expects. If it is not that house, abort — even if you have paid it “for years” from memory.

Shared compounds have many meters. “The one near the mango tree” is not an identifier.

Who receives the token SMS

Usually the paying msisdn, or the number the app account uses. That is often you, in Accra, while the meter is in Sunyani. You must relay the ~20 digits without WhatsApp compression turning 0 into O. Voice, in groups of four or five, with a read-back. Screenshot the original SMS; forwarding can mangle it.

If you want the tenant to receive SMS, some checkouts let you set a notify number. If not, they need you on the line until the keypad beeps success.

Do not send the token into a group chat with extra uncles who will try it on other meters “just in case.” A used token is used.

One debit, two households’ panic

The remote person will say “it has not come.” You will be tempted to buy again. Look at your wallet. If you were debited, hunt the SMS, do not open a second channel. One debit unless reversed. You can call ECG 0302 611 611 from the paying side with the reference; the tenant can also call from the meter side. Two people calling without the reference is noise.

PIN timeouts on *226# still mean: check history before *714*22# as a “retry.”

Which channel for remote pay

PowerApp is strong if you already saved that meter and like receipts — if OTP works. *713*414# is only for reading app OTP, not for the tenant to dial as a shop.

*226# works without you travelling. Sessions drop; you are not there to use a stall as backup unless they have one.

*714*22# is teachable for a relative who will pay themselves next time on a feature phone. For you paying now, same flow: ECG prepaid, their meter, their name, your PIN.

*170# / *110# if that is your native menu and you will not mix postpaid.

Bank app beneficiaries are excellent for recurring family meters if the saved number is correct. Verify name the first time and after any change.

Vendors at the other house: they can vend if they look up the name. You sending P2P to “the guy in the house” is the high-risk version. Prefer you vend, they type.

Landlords, tenants, and who owns the leftover token

If the tenant vacates, unused tokens on that meter stay with the meter. Social contracts should be talked through. Technically, you paid that hardware. Do not try to “move” a token to a new house. Buy the new meter separately, name-checked.

Do not share PowerApp logins across tenant rotations. OTPs and refunds will follow the wrong human.

When the other house has a vendor and you do not

You can still vend digitally from your town and skip their stall’s mark-up, if they will type. If they refuse USSD and insist on the stall, you can send them money for the till — not to a nickname — and ask for a photo of the lookup name and the paper token. That is messier than you vending on *714*22#. Prefer you vend.

If their *226# works and yours does not, they can dial while you approve a wallet prompt on your SIM. Coordinate. Two people paying at once is the classic double debit.

Schools, shops, and “the other house” that is a business

A shop meter is still a meter. Name check still matters. A staff member who knows the PIN should not be the only person who can vend; write the plate number for the owner. PowerApp on a staff phone becomes a problem when the staff leave. USSD on the owner’s wallet scales better.

A remote-pay ritual that works

  1. Photo of plate stored.
  2. Expected name stored.
  3. You vend once on *714*22# or *226#.
  4. You stay on a call.
  5. Tenant types, read-back.
  6. Tenant says units appeared.
  7. You keep the SMS.

Paying another house is ordinary. Treating the token as a parcel you must deliver is what makes it work. Save *714*22# so whoever holds a GSM phone can repeat the vend later without you. Keep *226# as ECG’s USSD. Keep fake family-friend agents out of the chain.

Dial Ewale now

Keep *714*22# saved. It is the backup that works when an app, OTP, or data fails. One shortcode also pays Ghana Water and TV bills.
