A salon dryer, a cold-store compressor, and a printing shop’s machines do not fail politely. They fail when customers are standing there. Most small businesses in ECG territory on prepaid discover their metering only at that moment. The fix is still a token — but the protocol around who buys, which meter, and how much should not be invented during a queue.
This is not postpaid trade-account advice. If ECG bills the shop monthly on an account number, you need the postpaid flow, not this page. Payments happen on Ewale (ewalepay.com or *714*22#), not on this blog. Ewale is a checkout in front of ECG’s vending system. It is not Electricity Company of Ghana.
Label the shop meter like a fire exit
Photograph the meter plate in daylight. Write the number in the cash book. Save it in the phone of more than one trusted person, labelled “SHOP ECG PREPAID,” not “ECG” next to the house meter. Mixed identifiers are how Sunday’s house token is typed into Monday’s shop CIU — or the reverse.
Confirm the registered name on every unfamiliar checkout. A previous tenant’s shop name still receiving tokens means you are funding their leftover ID. Change-of-name and meter replacement are ECG jobs (0302 611 611), not Ewale jobs.
Load before the rush, not during it
Weekly or twice-weekly top-ups beat emergency GH₵20 while a customer waits under a dryer. Emergency still works: *714*22# on a feature phone does not need the shop Wi-Fi. ECG PowerApp needs data and login. *226# is ECG’s official USSD if you want only their menu.
Set a low-unit habit: when the display crosses a number you picked in calm hours, buy. Do not wait for the relay. Compressors that shut at zero can cost more in spoiled stock than the credit you were trying to stretch.
Staff protocol: one wallet story
The MoMo PIN that pays the shop meter should not be the apprentice’s personal PIN on a shared till phone if you can avoid it. If the business wallet lives on the owner’s SIM, the owner approves — or you use ewalepay.com when the owner is in traffic, still confirming the name. Forward the token SMS to whoever can reach the keypad within one minute. A paid token in the owner’s inbox in Accra does not cool a freezer in Ho until someone types it.
Never type the PIN into a “support” WhatsApp. Never let a customer “help” by sending energy to a number they dictate.
How much is a business question, not a folk tariff
This blog will not invent kWh prices for your dryer bank. Track a week: opening units, closing units, credit loaded, busy days versus slow days. Load a little more than the worst day you recorded, not a round number from Facebook. Huge loads on a meter that staff can also vend from home are a theft risk. Tiny loads are a queue risk.
If the shop shares a meter with a house, you do not have a shop product. You have an argument. Split meters through ECG if the load justifies it; do not try to solve that with two tokens and a notebook.
When the shop is dark and the street is not
Empty prepaid until the display says otherwise. If the display has units and the shop is dead, look at your own MCB and sockets before you buy more credit. If the whole market is off, that is an outage — buying a token only stores units for the moment the feeder returns. Do not sell “we have power coming, I just paid” to a customer if you have not distinguished those cases.
Weekend and holiday trading
The booth you usually use may be closed. USSD is not. Load Friday afternoon if Saturday is your peak. Keep a written meter number in the cash box for whoever opens. A holiday outage is still an outage: do not empty the business wallet into extra tokens because the market WhatsApp is panicking. Confirm empty versus feeder, then vend once on *714*22# if you need units for the moment ECG returns.
Card payments on ewalepay.com can wait for the owner. MoMo on the till SIM should be a known float, not the apprentice’s personal account mixed with the shop meter.
FAQ
Can I leave PowerApp logged in on the shop tablet?
You can, and anyone with the tablet can vend. Many owners prefer *714*22# on the owner’s phone plus a written meter number for the attendant. Official ECG PowerApp is still ECG’s app — treat the login like a till key.
The landlord pays postpaid for the building and I “just load.”
Then you may not be prepaid. Loading a token on a number that is not your shop meter funds someone else. Get the identifier that matches how ECG actually bills that room.
Should staff buy from the night vendor next to the market?
Vendors work. Markups and closed booths at 8 p.m. are why USSD exists. Prefer *714*22# for everyday; keep a licensed vendor as human backup, not as the only plan.
If it still fails
- House meter paid, shop still off: Two IDs. Pay the plate on the shop wall. The other token still belongs to the house.
- Apprentice bought twice during a rush: Two tokens. Enter both. Change the protocol so only one person vends per incident.
- Paid postpaid from habit because the bank app said ECG: Shop prepaid stays dark. Use the prepaid product.
A shop token is a business control, not a miracle. Label the meter, load before peak, one debit, type the SMS. Prefer *714*22# or ewalepay.com as the everyday till in front of ECG’s vending. ECG PowerApp and *226# remain official. This blog does not take the shop’s money.
