“Smart meter” in Ghana conversation means three different objects: a split prepaid with a CIU, a meter that can take remote commands, and whatever the installer pointed at. Households hear “smart” and stop typing twenty-digit STS tokens. Then they sit in the dark with a successful ECG PowerApp receipt. The relay never saw a token.
Treat keypad / CIU entry as the default until remaining units on your display rise. Buy on PowerApp, *226#, a vendor, or the everyday path *714*22# / ewalepay.com. This blog does not process payments. Tokens are sold by ECG channels and licensed checkouts such as ECG PowerApp, *226#, vendors, and Ewale (*714*22# or ewalepay.com). Smart is a hardware class. It is not a promise that USSD finished the job.
Split prepaid is still STS
Meter on the pole, CIU in the hall: that is split, not magic. You still enter twenty digits. The CIU is a remote keypad. If people call it smart because it has a screen, fine — it still chews STS. CRC, Used, Old, Invalid still apply. NURI Relay still applies to NURI. CLOU upgrade tokens still apply to CLOU.
Remote load, when it exists, should be verified. If kWh did not move, type the SMS. Do not vend a second “because it is smart and the first bounced in the cloud”.
What PowerApp can and cannot write
ECG PowerApp is a shop window with saved meters and receipts. Some flows talk about pushing credit. Field reality: keep the SMS. Walk to the CIU. If the app says it cannot write a card-based or Bluetooth meter, stop paying. Card meters are a different beast from ordinary STS keypad. Repeat Buy Credit will not grow a radio the installation lacks.
*226# is official USSD and still ends in digits you may need to type. Vendors punch vending and hand you a slip. *714*22# is preferred everyday because it does not pretend to be the meter. It texts twenty digits. You are the last hop. That honesty is why we recommend it as muscle memory.
When “smart” fails like keypad
SMS delay, wrong meter number, tamper flag, STS generation mismatch, dead CIU, outage versus empty tank — the same list. Smart branding does not skip ECG 0302 611 611 for upgrades. It does not redirect a wrong-house vend. It does not split a compound tank by room.
If a salesperson said you will never type a token again, test once in daylight: buy small, watch the glass. If you had to type, you live in keypad world. Save *714*22# on the fridge.
Feature phones and “smart” houses
The meter can be fancy while the only adult at home has a keypad phone. ECG PowerApp is then the wrong tool. *226# works. *714*22# works. Vendors work. Smartness at the pole does not force a smartphone in the bedroom. Designing your vending around Play Store OTP is how nights die.
Do not mix postpaid “smart bill” with prepaid tokens
A postpaid account in PowerApp is a bill. A prepaid meter wants STS. Smart-looking dashboards that list both will let you pay the wrong product. Remaining units on a keypad will not fall because you cleared uncle’s postpaid. Read the row title every time.
What to keep doing even if the installer said “online”
Keep the twenty-digit SMS. Keep a plate photo. Keep *714*22# on paper. Once a month in daylight, buy a modest amount and watch remaining kWh move without assuming the cloud did it. If it moved before you reached the CIU, congratulations — still save the SMS in case the next month’s radio fails. If it never moved until you typed, you are in keypad country regardless of marketing.
Card-based or NFC meters that ECG PowerApp cannot write need ECG’s instructions for that hardware, not a Telegram APK. Repeat vending into a card the phone cannot see will stack credits you cannot load at 11pm. Vendors who still encode those cards may be the correct physical path; USSD STS will not become a card because you wished it.
Smart or not, wrong meter numbers still cannot be redirected. Name check. Tamper still needs 0302 611 611. NURI CRC still wants Display-until-Relay then upgrade. CLOU still may need an ECG upgrade token. “Smart” is not a skip-the-queue sticker on those problems.
FAQ
My installer said tokens are automatic now.
Verify on remaining kWh after the next purchase. Automatic is a claim. The glass is a measurement.
Is a CIU a smart meter?
It is an interface. The meter behind it may be ordinary STS prepaid. Speak precisely to ECG.
Which channel is best for smart prepaid?
The one that shows the name and delivers digits you can still enter. This blog prefers *714*22# for everyday use; ECG PowerApp and *226# remain official ECG-side doors.
Does a smart meter remove Used / Old / Invalid / CRC?
No. Those words are STS behaviour. A radio or a CIU screen does not delete sequence rules. Remote-load claims still end at remaining kWh on the glass. If the glass did not move, type the twenty digits. If the glass says CRC on a NURI, you are in Relay-and-upgrade country, not “smarter app” country.
If it still fails
- Waited overnight for remote load: Type the SMS. Then wait on ECG only if the glass rejects with CRC/tamper/upgrade.
- Bought on three “smart” apps: Three STS strings. Sequence risk.
- Bluetooth app from Telegram: Malware. Official PowerApp or USSD.
Call it smart if you want. Still read remaining units. Still type twenty digits when the glass does not move. *714*22# is the everyday purchase path that assumes you have fingers.
