Emergency units at 11 p.m. are why USSD exists. Vendors sleep. The shortcode does not. The risk at night is rushing the meter number and buying twice when SMS is slow.
Payments happen on Ewale (ewalepay.com or *714*22#), not on this blog.
What you need
- A torch to read the meter sticker.
- Wallet balance.
- Someone awake to receive the PIN if the wallet sits on another phone.
The flow on *714*22#
- Read the meter number before you panic-dial.
- Pay prepaid on *714*22#.
- Wait for the token. Enter it. Sleep.
After you pay
If the token SMS is slow at night, wait longer than you want to. A second 2 a.m. purchase is still a second token.
If something fails
- Guessed meter number in the dark: Wait for light or use a torch. Guessing donates units next door.
- Grid is actually down: A token will not light a feeder that is off. Check neighbours before you buy large units.
Night payments are normal. Night double payments are optional and expensive.
