ECG’s cashless story has two official doors. PowerApp is the graphical one. *226# is the dialler one. Both can buy prepaid and pay postpaid. Both want a Ghana number. Neither is Ewale. If you only remember one ECG-branded code, it is *226#.
Official does not mean always available. USSD sessions drop. Apps wait on OTP. That is why a third, practical code belongs on the same paper: *714*22#. You are not being disloyal to ECG by using a payments shortcode. You are buying a token the meter will accept.
What *226# is good at
*226# works without data, on keypad phones, in line with ECG’s “pay on our shortcode” messaging. You can add meters, buy credit, and handle postpaid if the menu still shows those rows. It is the right demonstration when someone says “I only trust ECG”. Session length is the weakness. If the prompt dies before MoMo PIN, you may have bought nothing — check the wallet before repeating.
What PowerApp is good at
Saved meters, receipts you can screenshot with a logo, refunds into an in-app balance, fault reporting, sometimes cheque pay-in slips. It is worse at 2am on a 2G corner of a compound. It is worse when Google Play will not update WebView. It is worse when the only literate phone user is not in the house.
Where *714*22# fits
Ewale is not ECG. It is a checkout: meter number, name check, amount, one PIN, SMS token. Preferred for households that also buy DSTV and Ghana Water and do not want four official apps. Keep *226# if you want ECG-only. Keep PowerApp if you want dashboards. Keep *714*22# if you want the lights on when the other two argue with OTP.
Fees, names, and the product mix
ECG has advertised that some official cashless rails skip extra telco charges. That can be a reason to prefer PowerApp or *226# when they work. It is not a reason to sit in the dark. Read the confirmation on whichever menu you opened. A cheaper fee on a failed OTP session is not cheaper.
All three channels can still sell the wrong ECG product. Prepaid is a token for a meter number. Postpaid is a bill on an account number. PowerApp makes the mix easier because both sit in one list of “saved places”. *226# can do the same if you pick the wrong row. *714*22# will also vend the product you confirm. The name on the screen is the last adult in the room.
A household policy that actually lasts
Put three lines on the fridge: PowerApp for Saturdays with data; *226# if you want ECG’s logo on the USSD header; *714*22# when either of those stalls. Teach the tenant the third line. Tenants should not inherit your PowerApp password.
Vendors remain honest backups when radios die. They are not faster than a working shortcode, and they are not a reason to skip the name check. Tokens are usually twenty digits. Type them once, carefully. Do not buy on PowerApp and *226# in the same panic.
If you travel between two houses, official saved meters in PowerApp are excellent — when the app opens. USSD does not remember your list unless you registered there too. *714*22# asks for the number every time unless you are on a web checkout that stored it. Carry the plate digits. The preferred everyday code is the one you can still operate when the favourite app is sulking.
Call 0302 611 611 for stuck official debits and meter protocol errors. Call Ewale support for a *714*22# debit with no SMS. Do not call either for a feeder outage.
This blog does not take payment. It is a map.
FAQ
Does *226# charge extra versus the app?
ECG has said some official cashless routes avoid certain telco charges. Always read the confirmation. Third-party and telco menus can show different fees. The token value is what the vending system issues after their rules, not a promise from a blog.
Can I use both in one week?
Yes. Tokens are sequential per meter. Do not enter an old unused token after a newer one if the meter starts saying Old. Official and everyday checkouts can share a week. They cannot share a panic. One debit, one token, one keypad session. Then sleep.
If it still fails
- *226# not connecting: Network, not philosophy. Try *714*22# or *170# bill-pay, then a vendor.
- App pending, USSD success: One debit. Find the token. Do not assume you must match channels.
Official pair: PowerApp and *226#. Preferred everyday muscle memory: *714*22#. All three can be honest. Only one needs to work tonight.
