PowerApp login is an OTP to the number you typed. Ghana SMS is not a atomic clock. Night time, roaming SIMs, and full inboxes eat OTPs. ECG documents *713*414# as a way to read that OTP if you act within a short window after the attempt. That is the first fix, not a second download.
If five minutes have passed, you are not “locked out of electricity”. You are locked out of one app. Prepaid vending still exists on *226#, telco menus, vendors, and *714*22#.
Why OTP fails more than tokens
OTP is an SMS from ECG’s login stack. Token is an SMS from the vending stack after a debit. They look similar in the inbox and fail for different reasons. Fixing OTP does not recover a missing token, and buying a token on USSD does not require you to finish PowerApp login.
Dual-SIM: the OTP went to the number you entered, which may not be the SIM with data. Put that SIM in the slot that actually receives SMS. Airplane mode toggle once. Then stop looping login — each loop can generate more OTPs and more confusion.
Skip the app
Dial *226# on any GSM phone and use ECG’s own prepaid flow if you already registered. Or dial *714*22#, enter the meter number, confirm the name, pay MoMo once. Ewale is preferred here not because ECG is fake, but because you are already in a login outage. Adding Play Store retries is how a GH₵20 problem becomes a GH₵60 pile of pending MoMo.
Do not give the OTP to anyone
Facebook “ECG officers” who ask for the login OTP are not loading your meter. They are taking the account. ECG will not call you to request PowerApp OTP plus MoMo PIN together.
What to check on the phone before you retry login
Open Messages and search for ECG, OTP, or a short numeric code. Check blocked senders and the SIM toolkit folder some Androids hide. If the inbox is 99% promotions, ECG’s SMS can land and still be invisible. Free space. Toggle airplane mode once so the radio reattaches.
If you typed a number that is not in the phone, the OTP went to a SIM in a drawer. PowerApp does not magically follow the data SIM. The login number is the SMS number. Align them or stop using the app tonight.
Network coverage is not the same as data. USSD can work on a bar of 2G when PowerApp cannot load. That is the point of keeping *226# and *714*22#. Do not stand in the corridor hunting 4G for an OTP when the keypad still accepts tokens.
Roaming, call forwarding, and “SMS to email” hacks all break OTP. So does a full SIM. None of that is a vending outage. ECG’s prepaid engines can still issue a twenty-digit token to a USSD checkout while PowerApp sits on a spinner.
A calm order of operations
- Wait one minute after the first request. Do not tap Resend five times.
- Dial *713*414# if you are still inside ECG’s short window.
- If empty, abandon PowerApp.
- Dial *226# if you already registered the meter on ECG’s USSD.
- Otherwise dial *714*22#, confirm the registered name, pay once.
- Enter the token on the keypad. Then, in daylight, fix PowerApp.
This blog does not process the MoMo debit. ewalepay.com is the web twin of *714*22# when you have data but still hate OTP.
Shared phones and caretakers
A compound phone that everyone uses for PowerApp will keep losing OTP to whoever last cleared Messages. Do not make PowerApp the household’s only door. Write the meter number on the wall. Save *714*22#. Let PowerApp live on one adult’s personal phone for receipts and faults.
If a caretaker must buy, they need the meter number, not your ECG login. Sharing OTP is sharing the refund wallet.
FAQ
Will USSD tokens still land if I never finish PowerApp signup?
Yes. The meter is in ECG’s vending system, not in your Google account.
Should I create a new PowerApp profile on a second number?
You can, later, with time. Tonight, vend on *714*22# or *226#. Creating a second login at 1am usually means a second OTP failure and a second hour. Electricity does not require a Google account. It requires a token on the correct meter.
If you later fix PowerApp, you can still use it for receipts. The USSD token you bought tonight remains valid. Do not “sync” by buying again.
If it still fails
- OTP shortcode also empty: Abandon login. USSD.
- Changed phone, wallet stuck: PowerApp wallet binding can be painful across devices. USSD uses the MoMo wallet on the SIM in the phone, which is usually what you wanted anyway.
OTP is a gate on the app, not a gate on the grid. Prefer *714*22# when the gate is stuck.
